The Matosinhos City Council held a meeting with companies within its municipal area to prepare for the launch of ENNO – Energias do Norte, the largest Renewable Energy Community (CER) in the country.
The Municipality is one of the founding entities of ENNO, a project promoted by LIPOR in partnership with 28 entities from the Northern region, and assumes the presidency of the Board of Directors for the first two years of the term.
ENNO produces and shares renewable energy from the energy recovery of urban waste, in a circular economy model with the capacity to generate the equivalent of the electricity consumption of the municipality of Matosinhos. The project will reduce electricity costs, ensure greater tariff stability, strengthen local energy autonomy, contribute to carbon neutrality and combat energy poverty.
The initiative involves municipalities, municipal companies and public entities from the Northern region and has the technical support of the Porto Energy Agency and LIPOR itself.
ENNO’s main objective is the production and sharing of renewable energy generated from the energy recovery of urban waste, in a model that reinforces the circular economy already developed by LIPOR over several decades.
The energy produced will be integrated into the national electricity grid, with the capacity to supply the equivalent of the consumption of the entire municipality of Matosinhos. Among the main benefits are:
– Reduced electricity costs for members;
– Greater tariff stability, with less exposure to the volatility of the free market;
– Strengthening of local energy autonomy;
– Effective contribution to carbon neutrality;
– Combating energy poverty.
The project has the technical support of the Porto Energy Agency and LIPOR itself, guaranteeing technical rigor and financial sustainability to the implemented model.
ENNO comprises 28 founding entities, including seven of the eight municipalities associated with LIPOR (Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo and Vila do Conde), as well as the municipalities of Paredes, Santo Tirso and Trofa.
Several municipal companies and institutional entities are also participating, namely Ágora – Cultura e Desporto do Porto, Águas e Energia do Porto, Domus Social, Espaço Municipal, Maiambiente, Porto Ambiente, Porto Vivo SRU, STCP, Varzim Lazer, APDL – Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, Casa da Arquitetura, Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João, ISEP – Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, Ordem dos Arquitetos – Secção Regional Norte, Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto and LIPOR itself.
