On 26 September 2021, the City of Krakow led the Great Ecology Lesson to raise the awareness of climate change. It was an open-air event on a sunny Sunday, where thousands of citizens came to listen, learn and participate in activities to enhance environmental awareness.
More than a dozen stands promoted a sustainable lifestyle, renewable energy, waste segregation and reduction, as well as responsible consumption. The participants could experience a colourful and varied programme where children made seed bombs, learned “where the pollinators fly” and generated energy on a bicycle. Families were working together in teams by taking part in quizzes about climate change, creating a zero-emission home and designing happy, environmentally friendly cities. Anyone interested could obtain information on subsidies for the installation of photovoltaic panels. What is more – citizens found out about our ATELIER project at the stand of our department, represented by Climate and Environment Advisors who work within the project LIFE EkoMałopolska.
In addition, a discussion panel was held. Representatives of municipal units, universities and research clubs presented the possibilities of using solar energy and modern methods of thermal modernisation of buildings. There were also talks about rain gardens and micro retention, greening facades and roofs as elements of adaptation to climate change.
It was the fourth edition of the Great Ecology Lesson and it will surely be repeated in the close future. Kraków is observing a growing interest and involvement of residents in ecologically important issues.
