TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION

TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION is a private, independent, non-profit applied research centre of international excellence. Legally a foundation, TECNALIA is the leading private and independent research and technology organisation in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, employing around 1,400 people, 250 of them PhDs, and with an income of €110.3 M in 2019. TECNALIA is committed to generate major impacts in economic terms by means of innovation and technological development.

The current proposal will be executed by the Energy and Environment Division that generates business opportunities for different agents of its whole value chain. In particular, the Energy Efficiency and Planning area has a big commitment in this project. This area has a large experience in energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings, districts and the whole energy systems, and a proven expertise in energy planning by introducing models for an ex ante evaluation of socio-economic and environmental impacts related to energy technologies and policies, as follow-up strategy to the transition energy process.

Role in the project
The main role/tasks of TECNALIA in the project are:

  • Technical coordination of Lighthouse City Bilbao. Coordination of the Energy Management System for the pilots in Bilbao and participation in the design of the energy solutions (geothermal, PV, electro-mobility and storage, smart grids) and their business models.
  • Coordination of the City Vision 2050 for the Decarbonisation of the LH and Fellow cities using long term energy planning methods and tools. These methods and tools will be used for the energy diagnosis, the development of replication and upscaling plans, but also for the selection and design of Positive Energy Districts
  • Tecnalia will be part of the Core Team of the ATELIER in Bilbao and is the coordinator of the track 1 “Integrated Positive Energy Systems and Electro-mobility”
