Bilbao is a city in northern Spain, the largest city in the province of Biscay and in the entire Basque Country. Actually, it is also the largest city in northern Spain, with a population of 345,141 as of 2015. The Bilbao Metropolitan area has 1,037,847 inhabitants.

As a municipality under Spanish Law it provides the following services: public lighting, cemeteries, waste collection, drinking water supply, sewer system, access to urban areas, road surfacing, food and drink control, public parks maintenance, public libraries, market, waste management, civil defence, social work, fire safety, sports facilities for public use, urban passenger transport and environment protection.

Role in the project

The City of Bilbao is involved in all workpackages of ATELIER Project and leads “Bilbao PED demonstrator” (WP5).
